I picked up my D800 at Best Buy yesterday. I'm still working out how to set up the menu. The menu looks different, I'm wondering if face recognition is on by default or do I have to set that?

Anyway, at least one person advised me since I shoot a lot of birds, that the D800 might not be the camera for me.

I went out on my patio and snapped a few shots of back yard birds, nothing spectacular but wanting to check things out. Most I shot in jpeg fine, then opened them into ACR and cropped and adjusted. Only testing images, nothing to write home about! Even with the large file sizes and resolution, I find I can shoot with this camera in the same manner I did with the D7000. I found upgrading from my D300 to the D7000 caused me to develop my technique more than going from D7000 to D800. My first shots with the D7000 were bad!

Although these few images aren't a great test, I'm still encouraged!

Even heavily cropped, these images are superior to my D7000.

All shot at 5.3. Yard birds on monopod, 80-400VR

Male cardinal at 1/250, ISO 500, no flash, 1/250 jpeg
Female 1/250, ISO 200 with fill flash jpeg
pigeon 1/250 ISO 200 fill flash jpeg
Parrot indoors at 400ISO, 1/200, hand holding 80-400VR with fill flash

My iMac will get me by until I can upgrade in the fall. I updated CS5 ACR for D800. NEFs open a bit slow, but not so slow as to make me tear out my hair.
