Ok. Apologies if this obvious. I was shooting my daughter's rock concert in low light. Using 51 pt AF - continuous. I was able to move the af points as always, but every once in a while, the thing would go crazy and the points would move repeatedly on their own. It was like the camera was going haywire. My only theory is that the camera was writing the last shots and was too busy to focus. Otherwise, I'm thinking I may have a repair issue. Anyone know what this might be?
Sounds like you were shooting with 3D tracking turned on. The dynamic focus modes will move the AF points to try to maintain focus on your subject. In the 3D mode, you'll see which points it's using. I'd recommend single point autofocus if you're shooting relatively static subjects. I rarely use the dynamic modes unless I'm really struggling with the single point mode in most situations actually.
If you're in Single Point AF, the AF point selected would not change unless you're pushing the D-pad accidentally. You can lock the pad from making changes with the hard switch that rotates around the D-pad.
