Histogram/overexposure

It seems to me that my camera tends to overexpose photos. The histogram, on the Automatic setting tends be slightly to the right also. On Automatic should the histogram be equally light/dark or balanced in the middle? If not, is there something wrong with how the camera is exposing shots, and would need to be repaired? Or do I just need to compensate by setting up a manual exposure to avoid the tendency toward overexposure?
