I have an issue on my V1, which I am hoping someone may have an instant answer please.
When I switch the V1 on it automatically defaults to the rear LCD screen, when I lift it to my eye it switched to viewfinder as it is meant to do. However, after it has switched to the viewfinder it refuses to allow the rear screen to be used. This includes being able to review images. The only way I can then view the rear screen is by down powering the camera and switching back on. Of course then the next time I put my eye to the viewfinder I'm back to square one! This has been an intermittent problem since day one, but now it's permanent.
I cannot find any menu function that allows me to switch between screen and viewfinder. Any ideas please as it's driving me around the twist
I wonder if the display button is stuck. I don't have my V1 in front of me but if I remember right one of the buttons back there basically turns off the rear LCD until it is pressed again. I wonder if you're either unintentionally pressing it or if it is stuck/needs cleaning?
Thanks. I've tried that, but it should work in that everytime one moves their eye towards the viewfinder the viewfinder takes over, then as one moves the eye away it should revert to the rear screen automatically. I the reset the cameras settings.
I've just tried the camera again and after your post I wondered if the sensor in the eyepiece is dirty and cleaned it. Lo and behold it worked for five minutes as it should, then I switched off and restarted and it failed again. Perhaps this sensor is the problem. I'll try and clean it with an alcohol based cleaner and report back.
I have experienced the very same problem. That little viewfinder sensor seems to be susceptible to the tiniest bit of dust, fuzz, lint, or any other foreign substance on the window surface. I always carry a water bottle in my camera bag along with several Q-tips (cotton ear-swabs) to fix the malfunction. Curiously, I have yet to experience the same frustration with the V2!
Thanks guys! I was at the camera shop and saw a used V1 kit for $200 and purchased it! It is not near the camera that my D800 but it is tiny, has excellent video and seems to be of excellent quality. I had the same issue with rear screen going out. I will try cleaning the sensor whe I get home tonight!
Hi Randy, Richard, and others, Just read the thread about a display problem with the V1. My wife's V1 just began acting up-no consistent LCD display. It would come on initially but then go off when looking through the viewfinder and not come back on. So...taking the advice on this thread, I cleaned the sensor near the viewfinder with a Q-tip, a lens pen and blower brush. Problem solved! Too bad Nikon didn't tell this on the phone this morning. Thanks, guys, and thanks Nikonians.
