Yes, I have Richard's grip, along with the RRS L-plate. Love both. The l-plate provides some extra grip on its own, particularly when shooting using the LCD. Also protects the bottom of the camera. Was a bit concerned whether the grip would fit with the l-plate mounted, but works like a charm. Have used his grips on several cameras, hope he's working on one for the Olympus EM5!
I have a comment and a question. It appears that the biggest difference (in my opinion) is that Franiec's is glued on and the Nikon product screws on at the tripod socket location. (It bothers me to glue something like this on! Otherwise I like it better. Can y'all confirm that my understanding is correct?)
The real question I have is what the Franiec looks like on the back. All of his photos published on Picasa show the front and top. Nothing on the back or bottom. And does it interfere with the Giottos 3 inch monitor/screen cover?
You are mostly correct. The Franiec grip uses 3M tape. Very robust tape. While I have never done it, he says you can remove it with some careful work with dental floss. His grip is a single piece that attaches at the front and wraps slightly around the side, providing the two points of adhesion. There is no back or bottom piece, so it interferes with nothing. The RRS plate allows access to the battery/card door, and can be configured to clear the mic/AV panel as well. HTH
There are actually two different RRS L-plates (perhaps I'm stating the obvious), one for the camera itself and one for the FT1 in case you are using a DSLR lens that doesn't have a foot. I'm not sure which one he means since both actually do help grip the camera/lens, although typically one doesn't use the left hand to grip but rather to adjust lens functions.
>>>Yes, I have Richard's grip, along with the RRS >L-plate. >> >>Which plate are you talking about? Couldn't find any >>"Richard"-one. > >He's referring to the Really Right Stuff L plate for attaching >the camera to a suitable Arca-Swiss compatable clamp.
Thanks so much. Didn't know about this plate: ordered, because I believe in the SwissArca system, it's needed.
Yes you can attach the FT-1. However, if at some time you want their L-plate for the FT-1, note that you'll need revision B of the camera plate. shouldn't be an issue, my guess is that all the camera plates they are shipping now are revision B.
Back to the Custom Grip... I just installed mine and I really like the way it looks and handles. It feels even better than I though it would, neither overly bulky nor too subdued - as Goldilocks said, "just right!"
I bought the Nikon custom grip and like it very much.Got it much cheaper here in Canada.Personally I really like the look of it better than the Franiec one.The grip is very well made and it suits my large hands. The camera can be used with it on or off, no sticky to worry about. As far as taking it off to get at the card, its done in 2 seconds , no big deal.
