Shutter speed = Lo?

I was taking a college graduation ceremony last night in an auditorium. I had a good shot of the stage from where I was up in the balcony and I was able to put my camera on the railing to steady it since I was in the front row.

I was shooting aperture priority, and on a number of occasions when I pushed the shutter release half way, the viewfinder said "Lo" for the shutter speed. I knew it was low, but this wasn't very helpful. I wanted to know HOW low.

I took the picture and then when I reviewed the picture I found out it was 1/4 second. Since there was no motion on stage, I had steadied the camera, and I had VR, this came out fine. But I would have liked to have known in advance what the shutter speed would have been. I knew I could handle 1/4 second. I knew I couldn't handle 5 seconds.

I should add that this was somewhat inconsistent....it didn't always say "Lo".

Does anyone know why it does this and what I can do to get the camera to give me a meaningful number instead of the unhelpful "Lo"? I am going to Italy in two weeks and planning on doing some night photography and I'd really like to not have this situation.

When looking in the manual the only thing I have found so far is "Lo" listed as an error message.
