Some folks have reported more than 2,000 shots on one charge... Your experience might vary, but whereas I'd never feel comfortable with one battery on my D200, the D7000 is a whole new ballgame.
MAKE SURE YOU FULLY CHARGE THE NEW BATTERY BEFORE FIRST USE.
>An additional 3rd battery is not necessary... The D300 camera and battery does a lot more exposures - more than double - the D200. The D7000 definitely does more than the D300 - subject to the qualifier often part of the first charge and sometimes part of the second charge is used to charge the internal clock on a new camera, plus getting to know the new camera menus.
Photography is a bit like archery. A technically better camera, lens or arrow may not hit the target as often as it could if the photographer or archer does not practice enough.
