This is a follow up post to;
https://www.nikonians.org/forums/dcboard.php?az=show_topic&forum=329&topic_id=6672

I originally performed fine focus tuning using an angled focus test which many discourage.

One of the tests I used was;

http://www.focustestchart.com/chart.html

One of the potential problems with these angled tests are getting a proper focus target.

I repeated with flat focus targets.

I used one provided by Len Sheperd and performed test to specifications provided and included a focus sheet by Bob Atkins but did not use the latter for a focus target.

I have included a few of the test images for you to see. All images are cropped near 1:1, near center of image.

BTW tests were repeated with VR off which showed the same thing as with VR on. Accidentally uploaded the VR on, ones and can't go through hassle of changing.

I also tested my kit 18-55 and my 70-200 2.8 which needed no fine tuning.

In my mind my results validate using an angled test which was easier to perform and interpret than a flat focus test.

Some curiosities I noticed were that fine tuning affects different lenses to a different degree.

My 18-200 is significantly affected by a -4 while a -5 was barely evident in my 70-200 2.8 lens.
