I'm seriously thinking about giving up hope on a D400 and getting a D7100 which is very compelling. My brother has a D7000 and I held it a good ways back. It felt a little small and a little awkward to me compared to my D200 but that was just a very brief impression.
Does anyone have a photo of a D7100 and a D200/300 sitting next to it for comparison?
There are very few retail places near me that will ever carry a D7100 so getting hands on can be difficult. I don't know of a single remaining dedicated camera shop in the Charlotte, NC area.
Anyway, any photos or impressions would be appreciated. Would also like to see the D7100 w/ the battery grip on it too.
I happily used a D200, without, and then with a Battery grip...
The D7000 I went to after the D200, felt better in my hands, body alone, than the D200. I felt the D200 needed a battery grip for ergonomic satisfaction.
The D7000, in my view, just blew the doors off my beloved D200. The image quality more than surpassed the adjustment on where buttons were placed.
The D7100, has an even better AF than the D7000, and the image quality will hold up against anything.
The D7100 will feel lighter than your D200. But it is as strong feeling (and probably in reality), and really, in terms of objective factors, it is a better camera. ISO, resolution, color, White Balance...
Nikon has really hit the ball out of the park with this one, and at a price a good deal less than what I paid for my D200.
Hmmm. I guess I'm just the opposite. The D200 fits me perfectly and I never liked it with the battery grip on it. But, I'm open to change especially with all the other advantages of the D7100. And maybe I would like the D7100 better with the grip. Who knows.
George I have had a D200 and still have a D700 and F100 and now added a D600 and I have to say the D600 is a tad smaller than both my D200 and D700 but it is similar to the F100 in size which is smaller than the D2/700 bodies. The D600 is bigger than the N80 you used to have so in the end I think you will like the size of the D7100 which is supposed to be similar to the D600. I also have had battery packs on all my cameras and the D600 battery pack is the best I have ever had it is just right not as chucky as the D700 and D200 and my hand fits just right and I have average sized hands.
hope this helps I can take a side by side pic if you want.
I'm sorry but complaints about the "small" size of the D7100 or the D600 seem a bit odd to me. I used a Pentax K-5 for the last two years. My current backup/walk-around camera is a Sony NEX 6. The D600 I use for studio and landscape work seem enormous to me.
