What good is the P ( from PASM) mode of shooting? I'm trying to organize things while learning DSLR and the Nikon camera.

So far, I've collected the specs and set U1, U2 and PASM Settings for the three types of shooting I'll do. U2 is aimed at Product Photography: AP mode, Commander Flash, JPEG.

U1 is for shooting family and party pictures. And travel. For some reason, I opted for the P mode in U1. I was reading up on it today and don't have strong justification for that choice. I don't like not being able to control Shutter Speed while in P. And it isn't a shortcut to modulating ISO. So what good is P?

I also know from my past experience with film that I like augmenting daylight with fill flash, so I've got "Commander Mode for Pop-Op Flash" as the top item in My Menu. And thus assigned the Fn button to My Menu for quick control of the pop or shoe flash. The top item in My Menu is dedicated to controlling flash. This is all programmed into U1 in consideration of the subject matter.

But, what about that P mode? Should I just opt for shutter priority and forget it? Or even M?
