for a simple introduction to time lapse shooting you might want to start with the cameras built in Interval shooting feature (see manual pg 155) and the Image Sequence feature of Quicktime...(file>open image sequence)...
My current camera, a D80, doesn't have an interval feature, and I didn't think the D7000 would have it either. I just bought the camera today, but it isn't delivered yet, so I don't have the manual. But this is very good news if the camera has the feature! Can you give me some idea if the intervals and number of shots that are possible?

Well then you should be happy for the D7000 does have an interval timer built in.
I have not used it nor understand it fully but I checked and it apparently can do up to 999 intervals with 9 shots per interval for a total of 8991 shots (I think??). Of course memory card space permitting!!
