I'm crossposting this from a thread I started in the 3rd part lens forum here: https://www.nikonians.org/forums/dcboard.php?az=show_topic&forum=157&topic_id=40480&mesg_id=40480&page=

(I apologize for polluting the boards...)

In trying to set up a liveview test for a lens issue, I've come across the following that I don't find covered in the manual.

I flip the selector switch on the body from AF to M; I do the same on the lens.

I turn on live view.

Image displays; there's a red rectangle in approx center of screen. I use the focus position selector to make sure this is centered over my desired point, which is approx center screen. I then lock the focus point with the lever.

I begin to dial in focus manually with the lens ring.

Suddenly, the large red square jumps to a point that is a considerable distance to the left and below of center, the square turns green, becomes much smaller, the camera beeps, and the square is apparently locked in place at this new point. It's not the focus point I want, and even if I "unlock" the focus point selector, I can't get the square to move. If I quite live view and start again, the same thing happens.

I don't see this behaviour covered in the manual under live view topics.

Obviously, in my ignorance, I'm missing something...
