I have a D 7000 and SB 800.
I have set up the camera and flash to shoot with the flash off camera. Works well. To shoot with flash off camera the camera flash must be engaged.
When I want to use my Hahnel wireless remote I have to connect it to the camera via the hot shoe - this then prevents the camera flash from fully openning and to going off . Thus the SB does not fire.
How can I set up my equipment so that I can take shots with the wireless remote and flash off camera.

Exactly which model Hhnel wireless remote to you have?
There are 3 different models. If it is not the Combi TF, it appears there are electrical contacts to the hot shoe, so you do not need to mount the receiver on the camera's hot shoe. I would get a cold she that mounts into the camera's tripod mount and locate the receiver there.

The Hahnel remote is model HW433 N80.
Len has given the very simple answer - just let it hang free. The connection to the camera is via the cable and not the Hot shoe.

I'm guessing the wireless remote has a cable which attaches to the camera release socket and the flash shoe on the body is just a convenient place to rest the remote. If this is the case you have two options.
1. Get a flash bracket, to hold the remote, which can attach to the body and also mount the camera to a tripod.
2. Let the remote dangle from the body via the remote cable.
