Will the infrared remote initiate focus when pressed, even though focusing is disengaged from the shutter button? I use the rear button to focus (AF-on). Also will the wired cable release also work similar (except for the cable)? Thanks

If you have menu f5 - Assign AE-L/AF-L button - set to "AF-ON" the camera will only focus when you press the AE-L/AF-L button. It can't be focused with a cable release or the ML-L3 remote with that setting.
With the AF On lock you are limited to one shot. The MB-D11, IR and wired remote releases are wired in parallel to the shutter switch so all the actions acetones associated with the full shutter release are all the same. Only the camera shutter release, MB-D11, and wired remote support the half shutter release actions.
Switch the focusing mode to Manual on the lens or the camera body. Pre-focus the shot and cover the viewfinder exit window. Take your shots.
