It came today... so excited and can't wait to use it. I know it's a huge step up from my D40 relic. Any suggestions on what the best memory cards are for it? I've read about it being a bit touchy with certain types or brands of cards. Has anyone encountered that issue? TIA!
Hi Melissa, I use 8GB SanDisk Extreme Pro SDHC UHS-1 memory cards in my D7000 (both slots), and I have not encountered any problems. I'm sure there are other good brands, speeds and sizes, but I've always used SanDisk in all my digital cameras and never had a problem. Good luck with your new camera. Paul
Congratulations, I’m sure you’re going to love it.
I use Promaster SDHC cards (rumored to be rebranded Delkin’s) without any issue. I have been using them for quite some time starting with my D80.
I think the main issues with memory cards are when people buy them cheap online at places such as e-bay, only to find out they are counterfeit cards with name-brand stickers on them (primarily seems to be Sandisk).
If you buy from a reputable reseller, you most likely will not have any problems. You can always wind up with a defective card, so there are no guarantees even when buying from a reputable dealer. But buying online at auction sites at deep discounts comes with risks.
Congrats! It's a great camera. What type of photography are you into? What are you using for lens?
I upgraded from a D70s, which has the same 6mp sensor as the D40. You'll love the D7000, especially when the lights go down and you can keep shooting in situations where the old Nikon would have to go back into the camera bag
Congratulations on the D7000! Do spend some time reading/rereading the manual; it's actually a very useful guide. And also keep perusing this forum for info and suggestions; it has helped me.
I retired my D200 to a back-up status about a month ago for new D7000. I am simply amazed with the ease of use and the quality of pictures from my D7000. I hope that you will have the same experience and impression.
I used San Disk 8GB Class 10 cards for both slots and haven't had any operational problems.
Great machine! I think you'll find the dedicated buttons easier to navigate than menus. You may want to adjust in-camera sharpening to 6, becaue Nikon ships the D7000 very conservatively set in this regard.
I now use Sandisk UHS-1 8GB Cards in both slots. I've also used Class 10 Transcend, and PNY 8GB Cards. All worked flawlessly, but I'd spend a little extra and get the Sandisk or Lexar or whatever high end cards FROM A REPUTABLE DEALER.
Format cards in-camera, and charge your battery fully before first use.
thanks everyone for the input! looks like I'm sticking with my Sandisk I already had an extra 2GB one so I put it in last night and so far so good. I realize I'll need a much bigger card this time around if I want to keep the quality of the pictures up.
I currently have the 18-55mm kit lens that came with my D40, the 35mm/F1.8 lens, and a 55-200 lens. I'm trying to decide between a wide angle zoom or an 85mm for my next lens. I'm also hoping to get the camera out this weekend and see what it's really made of. I'm already almost halfway thru the manual
Hi I was an early buyer of the D7000, trading up from my D70 (of which I was also an early buyer). What a camera the D7000 is. What a learning curve, but what results. Just great. I use SanDisk Extreme class 10, 8 or 16 mg. I always shoot "Large/fine", no danger of running out of space. Enjoy it! -Jon
