I have just purchased the Nik Plugin suite and I am trying to learn its features using LR4. I am slowly working out the various programs but my problem lies in saving the file and getting back into LR4 once the editing is done. Its seems so seamless on the tutorials. Its just saves the file right back to where they start in LR or PS. My original image does not change however. It seems to save a separate image for each of the Plugin programs, then I have a little box up the top left corner in LR saying that the images are " stacked ". It seems to save a separate image in each of the programs ( Define 2, Viveza etc etc ). The last image I tried I seem to have 4 images stacked. If I close LR and reopen, all the images appear separately !! I am totally confused. I just want to make the edits in the different Pugins and have the one edited image reappear magically in LR4.
Really appreciate some help. Its probably basic, I am a newbie.

Lightroom will always preserve your original file, so the plugins work only on a copy. When I want to use multiple plugins on a single image - I edit in the plugin which creates a copy of my original image with the plugin effects applied. Then I edit the copy in the next plugin. The trick is to make sure you check "Edit Original" rather than one of the other choices. That way no additional copies are created.
A better way IMO is to use Photoshop and apply each plugin to a different layer.
I think the problem I am having is something to do with the stacking of the image. I agree that Photoshop is a better option but I am only slowly getting familiar with it, its a struggle at the moment. I am finding LR a little easier and will try and master that before tackling the Photoshop method.
I managed to work out the Edit Originals to apply several of the plugin edits. Its works well but my problem remains that when I save the file, it does not appear beside the original down in the filmstrip. Instead it is hidden in a stack. I try and expand the stack but nothing happens.
The only solution at the moment is to quit LR, then reopen it, the edited image then appears next to the original as I want. Obviously thats a pain in the butt.
I think the problem has a simple solution but I do not seem to be able to find it.
I checked that and it was already clicked. I am stumped. To see an image that has been edited with a Nik plugin, I have to shut down and restart LR. Otherwise it is hidden in a stack. I have clicked everything I could find under the stacks tab, makes no difference.
