I am thinking that there has to be an issue with the lens. AFS lenses should work on the D5100 without issue.

There are three versions of the Nikon 70-300mm. The AF-S version, which also has VR, will autofocus on both the D40 and D5100.
If he is having problems, then the camera and/or lens needs to be repaired if cleaning the electrical contacts does not solve the problem.

The D5100 fully supports the 70-300mm f/4.5-5.6G ED IF AF-S VR including AF.
Do they have the AF/MF switch on the 70-300mm set to AF?
Is the lens fully seated and locked in the mount?
Is the camera displaying an err message FEE or F--?
