I've been shooting with a Nikon 3100d for about a year. I took a photography class upon receiving this camera and therefore learned to shoot in manual mode from the start. The problem is when I hand the camera to someone else to take a picture of me and my family - the pictures come out unfocused. The guide says AF-S and AF-C will work in manual mode. However, when I try this and slide the switch on the side from M to A, no picture will take. I hear the motor trying, but nothing happens.. I even tried switching to every other mode on the camera, and no picture will take, unless the focus is in manual. So my question is, is it possible to stay in Manual but use auto focus? Or is my camera defective? Any help is greatly appreciated. Thank you!

By the way I'm using a AF-S Nikkor 55-200 mm lens.
