I now can listen to the audio while recording through the beachtek AND listen to the audio after recorded in preview mode using a Y-splitter that has an RCA to 1/8" adapter using the supplied A/V cable from the kit.
I think is as close now as I am going to get to a reasonable HDSLR video production system with interchangeable lenses with a variety of professional audio choices.

Very mobile, the quick release from Cavision rail system allows you to go mobile with quick spin of the knob, disconnecting the preview A/V cable.
I also chose to disconnect the Sennheiser professional headphones and corresponding XLR audio input on-board mic and just go with iphone headphones without the ability to capture audio from my voice, just the shotgun like many people use.
Of course, you could choose to remove the grey hoodman and fold in the live view window depending on your preference.
Pretty light, pretty flexible. Here's the photo of the mobile system, and what's left on the tripod
How much was the total cost to outfit your camera this way -- less the camera body and lens? I'm looking to buy a Nikon 5100 very soon, and to use it for shooting corporate promos and short narrative films and this looks like a great setup for doing so -- thanks for sharing!
