What could have happened to change the way my D5000 behaves?

Thanks for all of your help. My previous post was about my letting the battery run completely down.

Prior to doing that night shots were great. No problem. Now when I take a shot at night without flash I press the shutter and it sounds like it opens, but takes something like 5 seconds to close. So I always end up with blurry photos at night. It is staying open way too long.

My settings are on auto without flash. And I have the shutter speed set to continuous. As I said, before the battery running down completely, shutter speed was perfect. Now during night shots the shutter stays open for 5 seconds. So all of this happens outside at night. And the result is trails and blur. When I go back inside into a lit room the shutter speed works normally.
