I'm interested in knowing from users if you've tried the new silent mode and what you think of it. To me, this is the coolest feature of this camera, and something that makes it stand out from all other Nikon DSLRs.
Sounds like a great feature! Sometimes when I've used my camera in a really quiet environment I've wished it was quieter, and it looks like the D5000 addresses this. I'll be interested to hear from D5000 users how effective this is.
I just tried Q mode and it does things a little differently than S mode. First, there is no 'beep' from the camera as it autofocuses. Second, when you release the shutter, the mirror seems to swing up more softly and doesn't come down until you release the shutter button.
Sound is less in Q mode, but mostly because of the lack of the 'beep'. The mirror noise is about the same for each motion, but since the return can be delayed, it seems quieter.
Thomas, you can also disable all beeping (focus confirmation, timer & remote) with CUSTOM SETTING MENU > SHOOTING/DISPLAY > d1. See page 158 in the user manual.
Ken Rockwell says here: "In its Quiet Mode, the D5000 is the quietest Nikon ever (SLR)... slows down the mirrors and mechanical junk that has to fly around inside the D5000, which makes it much quieter. This adds a tiny delay between when you press the shutter and when the mirror flips up and the picture gets taken".
If you keep pressing the shutter release button after the shot, for how long does the mirror stay up before automatically dropping down?
