Complete DSLR noob with a question.
Quick question. I purchased a brand new Nikon D5000 with the 18-55 vr lens. No memory card just yet. The question is, does the built-in flash supposed to fire without the memory card? I went into a dark room and the flash pop-up but did not fire when I pressed the shutter button all the way down. Is it because I have no memory card inserted?

Hey hey, welcome to the world of Nikon photography. You are welcome here and have fun with your new very well made instrument.
several requirements for the flash to fire with no memory card:
1. Camera must be in auto mode with the lightening bolt OR
2. Program, A, S. M mode with the flash popped up and
under all conditions -- Menu option F4 "No memory Card" must be set to enable release. Thats under the Controls Section.
The default for F4 is to have the shutter button locked with no memory card.
P.S. don't forget that battery should be charged up fully before using. Its usually pretty dead when you get the camera.
