Hi everyone, my husband recently bought me the D5000 18-55 VR Kit. We are completely new to DSLR, and we have the following questions:

Have I damaged the camera? I recently took out the lens to clean (as I noticed a fog in the lens after using it at an airshow) and in the process of removing the lens protector (is it called a lens filter?), I accidentally turned the focus ring while it was on AF mode. I heard a sharp screeching sound when I turned the focus ring and I turned it back (again I heard the screeching sound). I am really worried that I may have damaged the camera.

I am determined to learn and understand the D5000 after what happened. What is the easiest and quickest way to learn to use and care for our D5000? We are reading the user's manual and I am also planning to enrol in an Intro to DSLR photography class. I saw that there is a book that is being recommended on this site. How different is this compared to the user's manual?

If I want to buy another lens, what would that be? We normally take pictures of homes, buildings, dogs and portraits and I believe our existing lens should suffice for our usage. However, we recently took our D5000 to an airshow. Judging from the photos, our existing lens is probably not adequate to capture the planes in action (probably need a lens that zoom many times more?). If there is one additional lens that we want to invest in, what would you recommend?

I look forward to hearing from some of the experienced users on the forum.

Thank you.
