I was hoping I could set the D300 and D700 to focus only release and get the shutter to only release when I have focus confirmation in the viewfinder. I use the lens for birds and read about the TC16A converter being used with the 500mm P chipped lenses. Do I need the TC16 to get this lens to function that way? Any help greatly appreciated.
After trying out my D300 with several AF lenses and watching the green focus light, I noticed something. With the 400mm lens attached, the focus light flashes regularly and never changes regardless of being in focus or not. The shutter will release no matter. With any af lens on, it will not release if I am too close to the subject, which is normal. I think the new chip confused my camera somehow.
The focus light will "blink" when the image is almost in focus. With a 300mm manual lens, I found that getting a solid "green dot" was difficult handheld, but a lot easier when the camera was on a tripod.
