Shooting NON Nikon lenses with adapters in Stop Down manual mode
I just snagged a m42 Takumar 50m mm f1.4 it is not the 8 element lens but I have read it is a real gem. I have ordered an M42 to F adapter and it is on it's way. I want to shoot it head to head against my Nikon AiS 50mm f1.4. If I can figure out a fair test besides a brick wall...
Anyway, I thought I would ask the group if others have a favorite non F mount lens they have converted or adapted to F mount. I have a few Zuico lenses I need to investigate adapters.

I had the CZJ Sonnar 200mm f/2.8 but I changed for Tamron SP 70-210 f/3.5 (Ad2)
I still have Industar 50-2 50mm f/3,5 with ext. rings mostly for macro &
Helios 44M-4 58mm f/2 for portraits
I'm very happy with this lenses!
Sonnar 200mm is heavy. Tamron (19AH) is CF lens, with 2x TC I have 1:1.33 RR.I dont need 2nd macro lens.
I think about buying 300mm f/4 (e.g. Sonnar,Pentacon, SMC Takumar) or Pentacon -Prakticar/Meyer Orestegon/ 500mm f5.6

John, very few 35mm slr lenses can be adapted to fit a Nikon F mount body and still focus to ∞ without an adapter with a 1.4X glass element. I'm afraid the Pentax m42 screw mount lenses fall in this category. The exceptions are T mount lenses, Leica Visoflex lenses and medium format lenses. However the best conversions are with Leica R lenses and Leica R to F adapters which replace the Leica mount. These converted Leica R lenses focus to ∞ and work very well on Nikon bodies. They are also 1st rate optics.
By the way I have the 50mm f1.4 Super Takumar with a Thorium radioactive element. It took me two weeks of constant exposure to UV light to clear the yellow haze caused by the radioactive exposure. This is a very high resolution lens. I use it mounted on an other brand dslr body.

Thanks, I will confess I ordered a cheap converter with a lens to focus to infinity. I will order one with a quality glass lens when I have time to research them. I am not very patient. So one is on the way to play with and I am sure I will want a quality piece to fit to the M42 mount. I do have the Nikkor 50mm f1.4 and I probably will not keep the M42 as a duplicate. JB

I think you'll find that the glass adapters lose you enough resolution that it isn't a win to use one compared to a native lens, even if that native lens isn't one of the legends.
The lenses with changeable mounts, like T-mount or Tamron's AdaptAlls, are a different story, since once you fit the proper adapter, the register distance is correct. Ditto for those Leica R mount lenses that Len was mentioning.
