400mm f/5.6 AI-s on a D700

I took some photos with the 400mm f/5.6 AI-s at a ballgame the other day. I shot mostly wide open and I'm still amazed how sharp the photos still come out. I read the posts from someone who purchased the 400 f/3.5 and the comments about how heavy the lens was. The 400mm f/5.6 is a stop and a third slower but is so much lighter and smaller than the f/3.5. In fact I carried it into the park in one of those reusable bags you bring to do your grocery shopping with. If you're in the market for a "cheaper" alternative to the manual f/3.5 the f/5.6 is great to have.
