If I were you I would call the following, all of whom have proven to be honest, reliable, have good prices (if not the exact best price), and I would also check the Best Buy website. I have had good luck with them also.
B&H Roberts Berger Brothers
Not familiar with Beach, but they may be fine also. You may also find that your local camera store may have a good price. I have found that the local Ritz camera in the shopping mall has just as good prices as other stores, sometimes.

This is a fine list to be sure, but I wouldn't for a moment hesitate to add:
1) Adorama 2) Calumet 3) And, maybe, Amazon, too, if only they packed their shipments a lot better and more carefully rather than just throw an item (sometimes very expensive) into a bigger box and then just casually flip a few air filled plastic baggies in there, as well. Meanwhile, the item is left to slip, slide and bounce around inside the bigger box during shipment. That'd be okay if one was buying an anvil, but NOT for a fine piece of photographic equipment. Or, at least not IMHO...
Adorama and Calumet are truly first class, front line companies, as is our very own Nikonians "Pro Shop" for many fine and high quality accessories. Generally, though, I enjoy buying from B&H. Now, if only they could figure out how to have a crew on duty during the numerous religious holidays they observe, I'd be a much happier camper. I don't know why it is but it seems like just about every time I need to buy something, B&H is closed in observance of some holiday or another. It must be some sub-chapter of Murphy's Law or something like that...
Anyhow...Good Luck and Good Shopping...

I too am about to purchase a D700 and have been searching for the best price from a reputable dealer. I order online from B&H or buy locally at Samys camera in LA. Ritz camera has the $2399 price as well and Samys is matching it for me. That seems to be the lowest price from the more well known companies. I wish I could wait a few months because I have a feeling its going to drop even more this spring. But isnt that always the case. Good Luck,

I'd check Adorama and B&H Photo video. Adorama has some package deals that involve the third party battery grip and CF cards. B&H offers a good deal on the camera body alone (same as Adorama). However, if you want to get the D700 new for below $2000... it may be a long wait to find it somewhere as NOS (new, old stock).
B&H has the body for $2319.95 but you need to add it to your cart to see the price. I've spent thousand$ there and find them to be very trustworthy. I've also used Beach in the past and received very good service.
Well, I pulled the trigger and yesterday ordered a 700 from Berger Bros. I have been a long time customer of B&H and on a whim called Berger. I must say that my initial feeling is that these are quality people and Lisa has been wonderful to deal with. To be honest they wouldn't quite meet B&H or Adorama but were close enough within a few dollars that it really didn't matter. They did sweeten the pot by giving a break on other items I did need, (NOT force sell).
B&H is of course good to deal with and I have bought several peaces of glass from them.
I can say that I will be going back to Berger Bros. as the experience was very pleasant and talking to Lisa was almost family like.
I got my tracking number and if I can hang on until Thursday I feel that everything will arrive in good order.
>Don Olson - what was the price (body) from Berger? > >D200 Body ~ 17-35mm 2.8 AF-S | 28-70mm 2.8 AF-S | 70-200mm 2.8 >AF-S VR | 50mm 1.4D | 60mm 2.8D | 85mm 1.4D | 105mm 2D DC | >300mm f/4 AF-S | Sigma 120-300mm 2.8 APO EX | 1.4x and 2.0x >teleconverters
I really don't like quoting prices I have gotten but will say it wasn't worth my time to hangup and order from B&H and I work pretty chea ))
If you are looking for the absolute lowest body price for reputable dealers B&H and Adorama are it IMO. I'd give the nod to B&H only because they have a good track record with me. The difference which was less than a tank of gas was more than made up for in attitude and the willingness to work with me and make it up in other items that I needed to get also. B&H and Adorama are like shopping at an high volume BurgerKing. Plunk your money down and run with your slider. Berger Bros. I would say is more like a boutique. Take your time, talk to the sales person, discuss different options they will work with you and in the end I felt my needs were met in a totally comfortable no pressure way.
If you are committed to mail order Beach is a good place to do business with.
I found the D700 on sale at Wolf Camera in KC. It was like 2319 for the camera only. Best Buy had it for 2600. Wolf wanted about $900 for the 4 year extended warranty (if it's run over by a pack of pacyderms you're covered) and Best Buy wanted $300 for its 4 year warranty (anything happens, you're covered). So I showed the Best Buy people the flyer on the Ritz sale, and they price matched for me and gave the Ritz price, which then allowed me to get the Best Buy extended warranty. I saved about $600 this way.
Best Buy stands behind their products exceptionally well, and they have a great buyer rewards program.
