It seems that Nikon have left the USB option ----> mass storage-----> mtp/ptp out of the setup menu for the d700. This means that the camera cannot be tethered directly to computer hard drive and that only the CF card can be accessed. The camera just acts as a card reader.... Frustrating for customer instant viewing on computer as you shoot. Has anyone found a work around for this, or heard from Nikon regarding a solution? Using software Nikon transfer as per manual instructions page 238, and no mention of this issue. If I am right, I would say this is not really tethered at all. Or is there something else I am missing compared to the option in the d200/300 and D3 ? Look forward to hearing your comments.
I am not really sure what you mean, but I have used Nikon Camera Control with my D700 and that works very good.
I also used Live View connected to my Mac.
You would need to buy a license, but there is a free trial for download which works for about 30 days.
An alternative, which people use, is to connect a external screen to the TV-out. then your rear-lcd just gets a lot bigger. From an "instant" perspective, it far faster then waiting for the NEF to be transferred to your PC.
Thanks Alejandro What I mean is, that, when I use Nikon transfer, I have to press start transfer each time I want to download the images. Rather than, as I shoot, the images just automatically move to the computer. So, it looks like this. Shoot three images, then go to the computer and press transfer..... wait, then go back to shooting.... There seems to be a fair bit of talk about this MTP/PTP thing in various websites eg. http://forums.dpreview.com/forums/read.asp?forum=1021&message=28808684 . How does it work for you, using your software?
Hi Alejandro I got it all working fine with Camera Capture Pro. Thank you, very helpful. One other query, do you have any ideas on how in increase the power in USB extensions beyond a couple of meters? Also, does anyone out there have any suggestions of alternatives to Camera Capture Pro? Thanks Stu
It is aimed to completely replace Nikon CCP in the studio and is being offered at 50% discount to Silver, Gold and Platinum Nikonians (see the members Rebate page for discount links or email me directly).
TetherPro will allow transfer your images automatically back to your PC, display them for review, allow you to tag them automatically and a whole host of other options.

Weird -- I guess this is why the D700 doesn't work with my camera control script for some people - I got reports in my blog of that - D300 ok, D700 no go. Coz my script just uses ptp. Is D3 same? That also doesn't work wit my script I'm told -- very annoying as it works fine with everything else from D2X onward!
They are wrong about the mass storage needing driver that worked fine without driver on XP.
