TC 14E and 80-400 ED lens with the D700
A fellow Nikonian is selling a TC-14E teleconverter that I'm thinking of buying. I want to use it with my newer-model 80-400 ED VR lens and the D700. All the research I did says it's supported but I don't understand the autofocus at F8 discussions. can someone help me with two questions:
Q1(and most important): Will it work on my camera/lens combo?
Q2: What does the autofocus at F8 mean for my combo?
Thanks in advance...

The D700 requires an aperture of f/5.6 or bigger (smaller f/ number) to get a reliable focus. Some of the newer cameras allow for an f/8 aperture for reliable focus.
When you add the 1.4x TC to a lens, it makes the aperture of the lens one stop slower (smaller hole).
The 80-400mm is an f/4.5-5.6 lens. This means at the long end (and most of the middle of the zoom range) the largest aperture is only f/5.6, meeting the D700's minimum requirement. If you add the TC14E to the lens, that largest aperture becomes f/8, now outside the D700's reliable performance envelope.
That does not mean that the auto-focus stops working, it just stops being 100% reliable. In good light, the auto-focus might just get slower. In less than good light, you might not get a focus lock.

Thanks for the info, now I get it!!
My primary need is to shoot my kids sports (baseball & Lacrosse) and although the games are mostly during the day, I really need fast focusing so I think I won't purchase the teleconverter.
