In this case I would recommend 500px.com. Next to sharing, public and private galleries you'll get also a very nice looking portfolio page.
Some features are available after paying subscription fee, but even the free part is quite feature rich.
What about Google+? With respect to photography it is an enhanced follower of the Picasa service. And there are plenty of interesting photographers there, sharing and discussing the photography in many different communities.
I have used smugmug for sales and blue host for a general web site and sharing photos. Keep a couple of things in mind, do you need quick up load and down load speeds. Discount sites limit or throttle their FTP bandwidth, or don't allow direct FTP access at all. Something to consider if you use tools like smart FTP to upload and down load files. Also some sites have control panels that allow file uploads, but not down loads so FTP tools can come in handy. Some sites charge you for templates and others include them for free, so you get what you pay for.
