I know there is history on this but did anyone get to the bottom of it?
D700 latest FW MB-D10 Grip (Genuine & new in that it has not been used before today when I decided to try AAs in it)works fine with the standard Nikon batteries but does not see the grip if AAs & their carrier are fitted. Tried brand new HR6 & then LR6 with specs as specified in the MB-10 manual.
Have selected the appropriate battery in the camera menu and selected MB-10 to be used first but with the AAs it will only work from the camera body.
Maybe the internal contacts of the AA carrier but that's not easy to check. Thanks for looking
Yes I think so, unfortunately I went to an air show today and the problem reoccurred, the camera worked from the body battery only for the day even though it shows as DB-10 First and AA LR6 in use in the menus. The indicator in the top panel showed body only as did the Info panel which had changed back to 5 fps from 8. No choice now but to try a short burst of contact cleaner, otherwise its a 1500 mile trip to the UK.
Cleaned the contacts, I believe the fault is inside the camera The AA battery voltage appears at two of the contacts on the grip (15 Way spring loaded) noticed that one pin (no volts seen on that one) is not as long as the others.
Could anyone look at their MB-10 and tell me if it is the same please???
Looking down onto the MB-10 with the wheel in your left hand and the two connectors on the right the offending plug has a row of 7 spring loaded pins and another row of 8 pins. The pin on the extreme right of the 8 row is shorter on my grip than the remainder. ie the pin closest to the rubber stowage compartment.
If I buy the higher capacity EL4A battery presumably another type of charger is required as well as a new end cap for the standard battery carrier?

That's exactly right, the pin you describe is slightly shorter than the others.
Thanks for that, that is the connector for the AA carrier. I reckon there is a problem in the camera which no doubt has been there since new, moral - check everything even if you don't intend using it.
Problem solved. The rechargeable batteries are bought (expensive) came as precharged but they were not. Checked with meter I found six at their nominal 1.2V and two at 0.8V. Charged them all and they came up to 1.35 which is what I expect fully charged. Into the grip and it now works reliably. It didn't like the standard LR6 alkaline but is happy with rechargables.
Decided to go for the EN-EL4A option, from my usual Nikon shop in UK the Battery, Charger and Cap come to £372 (inc PP). About $600 ? So the camera has a spec of 8 fps but the last three of those 8 cost £372, that's not a bad trick.
I bought a second-hand battery grip from a dealer last year. I also bought a brand new battery to go with it. When I opened up the battery grip, a battery was already sitting in it. I notified the dealer by email and he wished me good luck.
