Interesting! According to the Nikon site, there is no mention of longer battery life for the most recent firmware update. It states "Support for the AF-S NIKKOR 800mm f/5.6E FL ED VR has been added". Maybe the longer battery life is a hidden benefit ).
I have done the update and so far have seen no changes in the power consumption, but for long shoots I am using the D3's battery in the grip for the higher frame rate. However, there have been multiple reports of improved auto-focus abilities in some cases.

Not sure why that one guy was getting 500 shots per battery but I get 1000+ of RAW and jpg. Maybe he has a GPS attached that draws power or he uses the onboard flash or something like that.
I said there was no need to upgrade and "if it's not broke, don't fix it" but I decided to not listen to myself and did the firmware upgrade anyway. The results were so uneventful I didn't even bother announcing it to the world...until now.
