White Balance for Sunsets/Dusk Photos

Usually I use the "sunny" or "cloudy" setting when taking photos of sunsets/dusk to capture the orange glow which prevails at this time. I had a number of shots ruined when the "auto"white balance was used.

Looking through the landscape galleries, a number of photos with the orange shade prevailing but the shot was taken using an "auto" white balance setting. How was this achieved? Was a filter used?

Any insights/advice would be appreciated.
