I bought a Sandisk CF 2GB Extreme III card. The manual says that the camera supports type I CF and not type II. How can you tell one type from the other? My card will not format on D700, either thru the menu or the 2 button method. I tried it on a D200 as well and it won't format as well. I thought it was a defective card, so I put another one in and it still won't format. I can still take pictures but I would feel more secure if I could format the card thru the camera rather than deleting the pics after transfering it to the computer. Any thoughts?
When it won't format is when I go to menu, then format, I press yes but nothing happens. In fact it just stays in the yes option. I tried to format by pressing the 2 button method and the word "for" flashes for a few seconds but nothing happens. The same thing happens when I tried it on a D200 as well. I know it's not formatting because the pictures are not getting deleted. FYI, the cards where bought in the US at Staples. I wonder if they had a bad batch?
Intersting you should say that. I bought a 4GB Extreme III card on Ebay and my D700 would not even see it. No exposure number in the window. Not able to format it in camera, etc. I COULD see it on my computer and even save things to it. Turns out it was a new card, but a very old "style". It was probably purchased by a small Internet business who buys up old stock. It did not come in a retail package. Regardless, I returned it and purchased an 8GB card from SanDisk itself and it worked fine. I know you bought it from Staples, but I'd return it and buy another.
Aside from the suggestion above to press "OK" from the menu, remember when you use the 2 button format and it displays "for" that you have to then press the two buttons simultaneously AGAIN to format right?
If anyone is interested in new Sandisk cards Calumet & B&H are selling all the cards with huge rebates. I just bought 3 Extreme 3 8Gig cards for $11. ea. after rebate even one card is twenty something after rebate. They have all the other cards on rebate as well.

OK to cover one point from the OP that wasn't answered fully now that the issue of appearing not to format has been resolved:
Type 1 cards are..... the normal thickness CF cards
Type 2 cards are significantly thicker than type 1 cards. The 1GB Microdrive is a type 2 card as are a few card type convertors (e.g. SD to CF card adapters).
Basically unless you have a large stock of old 1 GB microdrives and are too mean to go out and update them for high capacity low power usage CF cards or you have a perverse need to use an el-cheapo card apapter and a stack of SD cards and thereby seriously reduce the data transfer speeds to a snails pace, you won't have a problem with the D700 slot only being type 1.
