Manual Mode and using Flash... Setting E6 Question
I've been starting to use my off camera flash more here lately and have came across a slight stumbling block. I've searched various forums for several days and have read my Thom Hogan's D700 guide over and over and haven't found what I'm looking for.
Is there anyway to turn off the auto flash bracketing (Custom Setting E6)when you have the camera in manual mode?
I tried taking some self shots right at sunset last weekend and wanted to set the camera up in manual mode to dial in the right exposure but the pesky camera kept changing up my shutter speed at each shot and on top of that the flash was bracketing... needless to say it took me a while to catch on what was happening and was getting frustrated.
Here's a shot from the scenario I was dealing with. I wanted to set the shutter speed faster to darken the background earlier in the evening. I finally got the look below I was after but only well after the sun went down.

This is from the Nikon D700 manual:
e5: Auto Bracketing Set
Choose the setting or settings bracketed when auto bracketing (pg. 130) is in effect. Choose AE & flash (j; the default setting) to perform both exposure and flash-level bracketing, AE only (k) to bracket only exposure, Flash only (l) to perform only flash-level bracketing, or WB bracketing (m) to perform white-balance bracketing (pg. 135). Note that white balance bracketing is not available at image quality settings of NEF (RAW) or NEF (RAW) + JPEG.
e6: Auto Bracketing (Mode M)
This option determines which settings are affected when AE & flash or AE only is selected for Custom Setting e5 in manual exposure mode.
Camera varies shutter speed (Custom Setting e5 set to AE only) or shutter speed and flash level (Custom Setting e5 set to AE & flash).
Camera varies shutter speed and aperture (Custom Setting e5 set to AE only) or shutter speed, aperture, and flash level (Custom Setting e5 set to AE & flash).
Camera varies aperture (Custom Setting e5 set to AE only) or aperture and flash level (Custom Setting e5 set to AE & flash).
Camera varies flash level only (Custom Setting e5 set to AE & flash).
G Flash/speed/ aperture
Flash/ H aperture
I Flash only
Flash bracketing is performed only with i-TTL or AA flash control. If a setting other than Flash only is selected and the flash is not used, ISO sensitivity will be fixed at the value for the first shot, regardless of the setting selected for ISO sensitivity auto control (pg. 108).
Best of luck

Thanks for the info! I looked at setting E5 several times and thought I had it set just to AE but alas it was AE and Flash. That should do the trick!
