i usd my d700 seriously for the first time last weekend on a quick trip to arches national park. i'm thrilled with the color, dynamic range, handling, and overall feel of the camera. having a big bright full frame finder is a revelation after years of various DX cameras - all of which i have been happy with, including a current and still much used d300.

however, i am not entirely pleased with the sharpness and technical quality of the images. they look great printed at relatively small sized and on screen, but up close the edges are very nasty in several different ways. many are very soft, which i'll have to study more carefully to eliminate technique, focus, or lens issues. on images which i'm not concerned as much about the sharpness i am seeing very unpleasant jaggy edges and color aberrations even with the best glass nikon has to offer. i was primarily shooting with a 14-24 f/2.8 (rented) and a 24-70 f/2.8 (mine). the latter, in particular, has proved to be stunning on the d300.

here are some small images to show the overall character of the scene - again i am very happy with the color, range, and noise characteristics of the camera.

here are 100% and 200% crops of the last image above - the left is the .jpg and the right is the .nef file processed in ACR 4.5 with very little sharpening.

the edges are somehow simultaneously soft and jaggy, particularly the .nef file. there is a 2 or so pixel square stairstep pattern which i have not seen before in my images. is this some artifact of the demosaicing, or am i just chasing ghosts here?

any comments would be appreciated. in other images i am also seeing a lot more CA than i would have expected from nikon's very latest lenses, but that's a matter for another post.
