Is there any way to hook up the D700 to a Mac running OS X and have it appear on the desktop so I can manually transfer my photos? I don't want to use Nikon Transfer. I can do it with all Nikons up to the D300 but not the D700.
I guess the only way is to use a card reader, which is a better option anyway if you use high speed cards such the newer 266x or 300x UDMA cards. The new approach for USB connections will not work as a mass-storage device. The D90 and D700 work this way, AFAIK.
You can use the Image Capture application that comes with OSX. Launch Image Capture with your D700 plugged into the USB port and turn the camera on. Image Capture will then give you a dialogue box which includes the option of down loading some images, choose this option and a window will slide open showing a thumbnail image of all of your photos and you can choose which ones to transfer and where they go on your Mac. In order to see the D700 NEFS as thumbnails you will need the latest RAW update from Apple which is here:
