That is a nice starter set I am in a similar position re: D700. So from what you want to shoot you are missing a wide(ish) landscape and a mid-range walkabout.
A friend has just been 'wow'ed by the 24-70 on the D700. '..do not try it unless you plan on spending money..'. I have a very good 28-70 so am trying to keep NAS for 24-70 at bay. Not sure of you budget(what you want to spend)there are some 3rd party lenses in that range that are well liked). There is a debate on wides 14-24,17-35(about the same price) and some are touting the sigma 12-24.
I am thinking more along the 17-35 myself.
If you are not in a hurry I would buy the best you can afford and then add as you feel you are missing a lens/mm.
I use the 17-55 and 70-200vr most of all of my lenses so I would suggest the first be either the 24-70 or 17-35. On the D700 both will be a good landscape with the 24-70 maybe better FL for walkabout.
Just my thoughts as I go through my plan. Cheers, Tom
ps You might want to look at a wider prime for landscape if you do not see a need for a zoom but I have no experience. I just bought a very good 35 f2 but that was not for landscape.
Thank You everyone, I order today my new AF-S NIKKOR 24-70 f/2.8G ED, I'll have to wait on the next AF-S NIKKOR 14-24mm f/2.8G ED. Thank You for your opinions. it did help me out to made a good choice.
