With the D800 expected to be over 30 MP and $4000, I am thinking that there is no point in waiting for a D700 replacement. I am wondering if I should just buy the D700 now or forget about FX and stick with my D200 and look forward to a D400. I do not own a single DX lens.
Shoot nature with respect and don't trample it or startle its inhabitants. :)
Ask yourself what advantages you'd have with your subject choices/shooting scenerios a D700 would give. Keep in mind there are advantages to both. For me when I finally sprung for a D700 it was out of necessity for the high ISO lack of noise. I still shoot with a D300 as well for the crop factor advantage, so each lens sort of serves double duty.

Since you have waited this long, why don't you just wait a few more months to see what comes along. I think that you should have purchased a D700 about 2 years ago, but since you didn't what's a couple of more months. You just may be the envy of the neighborhood with your shiny new D800. And, if it's really that expensive, I am sure that there will still be quite a few D700 owners who will be stumbling over themselves to have the latest and greatest and willing to unload hardly used D700s. But, I could be wrong (again).
LOL, you can always wait a month and buy my used D700. Seriously, though, if you're wanting to get a D700 the best time is probably the first week after the "replacement" is announced and the first week after it's shipping.
The D700 is a big jump from the D200 (I had one of those, too) and definitely worth it. A D400 is even more rumor and the rumors I heard is later this year or even next. I would expect a D400 (assuming same lineage as D300) would be $2000.
I took the jump about a year ago from the d200 to the d700. My main goal was also the High ISO performance like others have stated. To me that was the most noticeable advantage. I have since fallen in love with the d700. On the flip side i did upgrade because I was getting a photography business off the ground and new I should have two cameras as well. I'm hoping to pick up a, now old pics of junk D3s, (just kidding) once the new d4's start shipping. As side from the ability to shoot in low light its about the man behind the camera not the gear.
