The first body had a bent pin right in the middle of the card. Sent it back and just got my replacement for the first one. The first one won't recognize the card now this one won't format the cards. I read a recent post about the same problem, but there wasn't a follow up. Help! If I sent it back this time it may be for good.
I'm guessing you can't format from the menu for the follwing reason. When formating through the menu, you must use the OK button to confirm the format. Using the center of the directional thumb button does not work as an enter button when formatting. This is to make sure your really want to format the card.

I was in an endless loop trying to format a couple of new cards this evening. Only having the camera since Thursday afternoon I didn't feel the need to run to the manual for something that appeared so obvious. First I used the "Format memory card" from the Menu only to keep using the center, round button to acknowledge OK. Then I thought Ah ha! Nikon wants you to be really, really, really sure you want to format the card therefore you have to press the button labeled OK. I was relieved to see my card format successfully.
I like the two button method which I discovered after opening the manual. It was a little confusing at first in that I thought the blinking FOR meant formatting was taking place. Not so. Press and hold those buttons until FOR appears, release them and then press and hold again until picture count changes to FOR, and now you are formatting. The first time around I wasn't looking for the little FOR in the picture count.
Sometimes the obvious isn't so obvious. Glad it was operator error (me) and not a malfunctioning new camera.
