I noticed this website, ShopDigitalDirect.com that has the Nikon D700 listed for sale for only $1,749. That's almost half of the retail price of $2,999. Seems a bit fishy to me. I've never used this site. Any thoughts or reasons why this might be?
Let's stop and think for a second....if one of the world's highest volume and best priced dealers (B&H) is selling the camera for $2999.95 and it is currently back-ordered, do you realistically think companies like this can compete with them on price? Especially for that much less!
Gray matter! It is obviously a scam and there are not as many reputable dealers on the Internet as there are ads. I know we all want to cut corners and save money but photography is not cheap and there are a lot of people waiting for suckers to steal their money.
There are a handful of reputable camera dealers out there (maybe a dozen or two at best). Don't go through the pain and loss of your hard earned cash by buying from Internet crooks. Do your homework.
You know what this camera sells for. That's what you will need to pay. Just accept it and enjoy the latest technology!

shopdigitaldirect.com is a nightmare. Stay away. Lots of bait & switch. It's impossible to purchase a real, U.S. warranted Nikon D700 for anything less than the big merchant price of $2799-$2999. There's actually no need for any merchant to sell for any less than $2999 unless a customer is purchasing a whole bunch of additional gear at the same time and merits a small discount of some sort as a result.
