D700 and image area "Auto DX Crop"
I have noticed where some of the D700 set up guides suggest setting the image area to "Auto DX Crop". I have a few DX lenses including the 12-24mm DX but mainly I am using none DX lenses. My question is when should I be using the Auto DX Crop and what does it do? Does the auto DX setting work only when a DX lens is mounted and goes back to a FX mode when a non DX lens in mounted? Do I need to manualy reset the image area when ever I change from a non DX to a DX lens? Thanks.

The Auto DX Crop recognizes when you have a DX lens mounted and sets the camerea to DX mode. If you mount an FX lens, it stays in FX mode. Unless you have a lot of DX lenses that you plan to use often on your D700, I would leave Auto Dx off. This is especially so with your 12-24 because you can use it in FX mode from 18-24 mm and get the use of the whole sensor, rather than the much smaller DX frame.

Before you rely on the 12-24 in FX mode, especially near the "border" at around 18mm, I'd verify that the corner quality will be acceptable for your intended use. The lens was designed as a DX lens, not FX, and IMHO the corner quality at 18mm is marginal at best. It would certainly not be considered high quality if the lens were marketed as FX.
