Of course the 12-24 DX could be used in DX mode on the D700.
From previous discussions it seems that the 12-24 DX can be used for the full FX size from 18-24.
What is the full FX coverage image quality like with the 12-24DX in the 18-24 range? Are the edges and corners soft?
Or are the edges and corners comparable to the 17-35 or 14-24?
In general I was wondering just how useful the 12-24DX is for shooting FX mode. Is it just a stopgap until one can acquire a true FX wide angle zoom?

Seriously? No. The 12-24 is NOT comparable to the corners of the 14-24 when the 12-24 used in DX mode. In fact, I can't think of anything that's comparable to the corners of the 14-24, except in some other mounts (Leica M, for example).

I don't think "soft" really communicates what the edges and corners look like. In my brief experiment I found that while the image would indeed cover the full frame, the only area of the image I would consider usable was essentially the DX crop.
