I'm budgeting for a D700 in the near future. I would like to add a 70/80-200mm zoom to my lens collection. Not sure I can justify the cost of the Nikon lens. Anyone here use the Sigma 70-200mm on a D700 and what have been the results. I'd likely use it for some wedding and/or portrait work.
Nikon D300, D80, 18-135mm, SB800, SB600
Tokina 28-80 f2.8, 100mm Macro f2.8
Sigma 50mm f1.4

Would you consider the Nikkor 70-300mm f/4.5-5.6 G AFS-VR?
Not the most expensive, easy to carry around and while a little slow, it does have VR and so you can hand hold at slower speeds.

It is a great lens, has VR, but is not fast glass.

I don't have experience with the Sigma on my D700, however, I did rent it when I was shooting with Fuji S5. I got some very good results, although I did use monopod 90 percent of the time. I now have a 70-200 and where possible I use the monopod. Hopefully somebody with experience with this lens on a D700 will respond. Although I do not have experience with the Nikon 70-300 VR, I agree with Garrett that you may want to consider that instead. Besides, that would make a good 'walking around' lens on the D700. Good luck with the decision. How about renting it for a few days to see what results you get, and how you like it.
