A D700 plus 24-70 lens just fits in a ThinkTank 20 Digital holster. This is expandable to accommodate a 70-200. There is a side pocket that can hold a battery and a pocket on the inside of the cover for memory cards.
AS mentioned the Thinktank digital holster 20 will do the job, although it is a snug fit (& impossible with an L-bracket on the camera). The Kata H14 will accommodate the D700 plus 24-70mm f2.8 comfortably, with further room for a small lens, flash and various other bits & pieces. It is much more bulky than the Thinktank bag.
I use the Tamrac Velocity 7X. It will hold the D700 with 24-70 attached (a little tight, but OK), 50mm and SB400. It has ample outside pockets for memory cards, battery, etc. I think it works well for daily use and compact travel.
I am using the Think Tank Digital Holster 40 for my D700 and 24-70 lens attached. I chose the 40 due to the grip which stays on the camera all the time. As others have said, I think the 20 will work for you since you aren't trying to accommodate the grip. The Think Tank series holsters are great because of their compact but adequate build, excellent padding, compact flash storage pocket, and included rain cover. I highly recommend the product.
