f8: Shutter Speed and Aperture Lock

I haven't played with this setting yet, but it sounds like if you bother to go into the menus, you can lock the shutter speed to it's current setting while in shutter-priority or manual mode, and/or the aperture when in aperture-priority or manual mode.

This sounds like exposure lock for manual or semi-manual mode. What's it good for? Why would you want to do that? Even if there is a valid situation, it seems awfully extreme to go into the menus to lock/unlock the exposure dial(s). Can this feature be at least be tied to one of the programmable buttons?
