I have custom function F9 set to "Playback and Menus—ON". This allows me to use the main dial to flip through shots and the sub-command dial to change the view from blinkies, histograms, etc. I find that when the camera is set to auto-chimp mode (playback happens after every shot) I can't make changes to the aperture, for example, without taking the camera out of playback mode first. Obviously, one mode effectively disables another. Is there a way to get auto-playback AND the dial control during playback but not have to press so many buttons to get the camera to realize that I want to make changes to the exposure? There is that CF... something about release to use dials or something and I don't have my manual on me.
Perhaps I have to suck it up and press the shutter button.
I really would advise pressing the re-set button and sticking with the default settings until you are able to get back to the manual. Perhaps playback is happening after every shot, not because the camera is in Auto Programmed Exposure Mode but because 'Image Review' option in the Playback Menu is set to 'ON'? I wonder if you have had time to fully explore all of the playback options available using the multi-selector? Nine images at a time on one screen isn't bad, and access to the histograms etc is very fast. I'm also wondering if your settings for playback & menus timeout have been extended beyond the defaults? It would be quite normal to have to press the shutter-release button halfway to exit the menus and playback screens to return to shooting mode, whatever exposure mode is being used. Much better all round, in my view, to set up your shooting and custom banks to reflect your different shooting preferences and so avoid any conflicts. Good luck!
Many thanks for your comments. I'm talking about the playback review is set to automatically turn on after every exposure. I think the difference for me is that I prefer to not use the multi-selector, coming from Canon. The mail dial is a comfort zone for me and I like to use it where I can. I think tonight I'll give the shooting and custom banks a whirl.
