Combined with a business trip (not photography related), I will have the opportunity in a few weeks to take a leisurely three-day drive from LA to SF. Any recommendations for photo ops along the way? I expect that there will be quite a few, but three days isn't really that much time, so I want to make sure that I don't miss any of the "must sees." I'm from the east coast, and only get out west occasionally, so I'd like to make the most of this trip.
Agree to the coast. If you have never done it before, it is a must. Changing beauty. And, there is a great aquarium once you get to Monterrey. and, I would return the rental car before going into San Fran. Or, stay outside but on the BART line. A car is of no use inside the City.
Also, a Grayline tour once you get to the city will give you a good 'lay of the land' intro. Not surprisingly, there is lots to see. Weather will be a big dictator as to what you will see.
Well, Anthony, I like to shoot just about anything. Architecture, landscapes, wildlife, street scenes, ... I guess what I really enjoy most is low light or nighttime photography. I find this challenging and very rewarding.
There are many great spots along the coast, so I would generally stay along Highway 1, as has already been mentioned. Here are a few places to consider which haven't been mentioned. Rather than give you a long explanation, just Google these suggestions and take look at the details:
Morro Bay - not only the bay itself, but Montana de Oro State Park at the south end of Morro Bay. I would highly recommend this park. It doesn't get a lot of attention, but it is superb.
Piedras Blancas - this is the sea lion colony mentioned. Just north of the Hearst Castle area and it is right off Highway 1.
Carrillo Plain National Monument - a little bit inland from the coast, but a spectacular and under-rated location.
Your other option is to quickly drive up the interstate and turn off to Yosemite. Spend a day to get to Yosemite and view the sunset on half dome, a whole day to shoot and a sunrise before you drive to San Fransico.
