David Luchsinger, superintendent of the Statue of Liberty National Monument and Ellis Island, has announced that the interior of the Statue will re-open to the public on October 28, 2012, on a limited basis, and will be fully open by the end of the year.

Luchsinger said, "We have reached a critical milestone in our Fire and Life Safety Project where we can begin to allow visitors back to the monument on a limited basis while the project moves to completion by the end of the year. We are very excited that Lady Liberty will once again open her doors on her 126th birthday, October 28."

As I reported to you last year, if you were traveling to New York City starting on October 29, 2011, for about a year, while Liberty Island itself, on which the Statue of Liberty is located, remained open, the interior of the Statue of Liberty and its pedestal were closed to the public.

During this past year, the Statue of Liberty has been undergoing a $27.25 million renovation which included a long-planned major safety and critical facility upgrade.

The final renovations are planned to be complete by the end of the year. At that time the pedestal, and crown will be opened and at full capacity again, but as before the renovations started, advanced reservations will be needed to enter the pedestal, and a separate advanced reservation will be needed to ascend to the crown. The improvements will allow for increased, but not unlimited visitor access to the monument, including the pedestal and the museum, at the end of the year.

The Park Service has been installing code compliant stairways in the monument and has been upgrading the monument's mechanical, electrical and fire suppression systems. In addition the Statue's elevators will have been replaced, and its restrooms rehabilitated, once the work is complete at the end of the year.
