This is the start to a site I have been thinking about for a few years and have been working on for the last 5-6 months. Friends & family kept telling me to do it. I was either too busy or maybe procrastinating a little at the overwhelming task as I have built several in the past, well the day has come. I would say the site is about 95% complete as far as I know mostly having to do with the wording through out the site. The web site name will be Scott's Fine Art Photography. Site address will be www.scottsfineart.com . I have created it to be 100% handled at home for full control, no outside printing house's except for my local printer who will only be printing my larger prints 20 x 30 and up that I can't handle at home yet. If things go well in the next couple of years I see a Epson 7900 in my future. Before I start officially promoting it I wanted to get a few eyes on the site for some feedback and thoughts. Errors you find, things you might like to see different or things you find confusing if any would be things I would like to here. I'm not sure on the categories under "My Portfolio" for the images, these may get changed a little. Any input on those would be helpful. In terms of information I have on the site is it too little, too much? Anything you find odd I would like to here about. I am open to all suggestions! : )
So if you have time I would very much appreciate your thoughts on your visit to the site.
Thanks for taking a look. Sorry for the late reply, we just got back from a little family trip. I was thinking the fonts were all the same. I will now go back and check. What types of pictures do you think would help that page? Come to think of it I don't know if Zenfolio will let you put images on that page. I will have to check into that.
Hello Kari, I have been trying to go through and get all the fonts in check. Should be better now. The two pages you brought up to my attention are not equal. Thanks very much for help and taking the time to do so. If you see anything else just give me a yell.
Hi Scott. I guess I haven't looked at this forum for awhile. I just saw your post now. I like the over all look of your site and your photos are great as I would have expected from you. I have two suggestions for you.
On the home page you can achieve the same look as your slideshow without using flash. I have been taking flash off of all of the sites I maintain as none of the Apple mobile products such as the I pad or I phone support flash and I understand that Android soon won't support it either. There is a website www.dynamicdrive.com that has free downloadable scripts for jquery slideshows that will display on anything. The home page slideshow on my photography site has an example of one of their products.
My other suggestion is for your text on your about page. I would divide it up into paragraphs so it is simpler to read.
Hi Larry, Don't feel bad, I don't think anybody visits this thread anymore. I actually posted about the site after here in the Critique thread and had a good discussion there. Thanks for taking a look at this new site. You and I are very much alike in that we both run construction company's and at the same time are into photography so I am sure you know extra time to build a site is very limited at best. The site is actually Zenfolio based although I have been trying to remove most of it's branding & styles. Unfortunately I am for the moment stuck with the front gallery in flash. I have had many talks with them about this. I find it so odd that they are a Pro Photo hosting site and yet use a none color managed app (flash) on the front page for their gallery. What are they thinking! In saying all that they template is supposed display in pure HTML 5 if no flash is detected on the displaying device. They are also in the process of converting everything to none flash based. My only way around it now is to build a custom front page and use my own gallery software. I have the knowledge to do a simple page but don't thing I am up to the task of building one that looks consistent with the others form Zenfolio so I have not gone down that road. I just checked it on my sons iPhone 5 and it does display the slide show so I guess it works on both flash & none flash devices. I still don't like it though because it is not color managed. I think once the site starts to generate some income I will look into other means of designing a site. Right now the new start up is on a budget.
As to the about page, very good point it looks pretty long in the tooth especially since increasing the font size. I will most definitely work on that. Thanks for pointing that out.
Does Zenfolio allow you to build the site without using other software?
I use Dreamweaver to build my sites so I have the freedom to make them look any way I want them to. web hosting has gotten to be so inexpensive that I don't even think about the small cost. My photography site is my primary site and my construction site is an add on domain that only costs me $13 a year to register the domain and the hosting is free.
"Does Zenfolio allow you to build the site without using other software?"
I am not sure what you mean here "without using other software" ?
I actually have two servers I can use. One is through Zenfolio but I have to use there software. The other one I have used for many years at Host Gator. I have had a sports related photography site there for years, one I built myself. I only went this route this time around because of the back end i.e shopping cart. The thought of setting that all up again did not thrill me in the least. Turns out is was just as tough & time consuming using Zenfolio as they are not really geared toward people who what to fulfill and print there own orders. So the pricing structure I had to build my self using their there tools took just as long. The site however does have a nice consistent feel in the end so for now I am ok with that. I have Dreamweaver but it looks like a long learning curve right now. I even thought about just building the front page using it to get away from the flash gallery. But in the end I would have to learn Dreamweaver to so. What I really need is to clone my self.
Ok, why then yes. I believe you are able to build the front page not sure if you could build any others I am sure you could link to external pages though within the menu though. Front Page was what I used to help build my other web sites, I used to have one for the construction as well. My front page is really not all that complicated, it is in my mind very streamlined. My problem in creating one; like from Dreamweaver is the time it will take to learn how to make it. The other part would then making it seem like it fit with the rest of the style of the site.
Scott Really enjoyed your site. In process of using zenfolio to finish my own now as well. One note - on your 'open edition' page there is typo in first sentence. Really love the images and think the site looks great. Tom
